NESCOT Student SLG and Construction Incentive Day
In May, CISTC and Ringway collaborated to provide NESCOT College students SLG training and a Construction Incentive Day. This targeted students completing their Level 1 and Entry Level Construction Skills in Highway Maintenance courses. Ringway offers these courses to develop skills in construction, employability and digital fields, with a focus on highway maintenance.
SLG Training
Our trainers Mick Borner, Andi Lewington and Doug English delivered the sign, lighting, and guarding training at NESCOT College. SLG training helps both operatives and supervisors to manage and control traffic around roadworks by building on their knowledge and skills. This includes setting out traffic lights, signs, barriers and cones. This covered both theory and practical training elements. The students showed great engagement throughout and they asked plenty of questions to gain further insights.

Construction Incentive Day
Next, we welcomed the students to our Training Centre for a Construction Incentive Day, continuing the more hands-on learning approach. They were shown First Aid Training by Doug English, to gain an understanding of how to manage serious incidents in the workplace. They also learnt several life-saving techniques. Our trainer, Danny Chandler, let them have a go at using one of our 360 Mini Excavators. Lastly, our trainer, Andy Lewington lead a Pole Climbing exercise. He provided knowledge on the hazards and potential risks involved in working safely on ladders and wooden poles in a telecommunications environment.

Sarah Mills, Foundations Lecturer, NESCOT College, said: “I wanted to say a big thank you to your team for a fantastic few days. It was great to see our students so engaged and showing that healthy sense of competition. You have a fantastic team.”
Our Focus
At CISTC, we recognise the importance of giving back to the community. Our focus is on working with students, employers and our local community to address the skill shortage. Our vision is to improve the skills of current and future generations and to present them with opportunities for all routes in their construction employment.
The experience provided the NESCOT College students with a fantastic chance to gain more industry insights and how to apply what they have learnt so far at college. Overall, it was a pleasure to engage with the next generation in construction and we hope they found it beneficial. Here’s to shaping the future!
